Oxygen therapy is a treatment that helps people who do not have enough oxygen in their blood. It may be recommended for certain patients with chronic lung disease, COPD, interstitial lung disease, low oxygen levels, or other breathing-related conditions.

While oxygen may seem simple, it is considered a medical treatment. The American Thoracic Society explains that oxygen is a medication and requires a prescription from a healthcare provider. Using too little oxygen may put strain on the body, while too much oxygen may be unsafe for certain patients, which is why the amount and timing should be prescribed by a clinician.

Why Oxygen Therapy May Be Recommended

Your body needs oxygen to support your organs, brain, muscles, and overall function. When oxygen levels are too low, patients may experience shortness of breath, fatigue, confusion, reduced activity tolerance, or strain on the heart and lungs.

Oxygen therapy may be recommended after testing shows that oxygen levels are low at rest, during activity, or during sleep. Some patients may need oxygen all day. Others may only need it during exertion, while sleeping, or during recovery from an illness or flare-up.

How Providers Check Oxygen Levels

A provider may use several tools to evaluate whether oxygen is needed. These may include pulse oximetry, walking tests, pulmonary function testing, sleep testing, arterial blood gas testing, or other diagnostic evaluations.

At Pulmonary & Medicine Associates PLLC, pulmonary services include the Six-Minute Walk Test, oxygen therapy, pulmonary function testing, and other diagnostic services that can help providers better understand breathing and oxygen needs.

Oxygen Therapy Is Personalized

Oxygen therapy is not one-size-fits-all. A prescription may include how much oxygen to use, when to use it, what device to use, and whether settings should change during activity or sleep.

Patients should not change oxygen flow rates without medical guidance. If you feel your oxygen is not helping, your symptoms are worsening, or your equipment is difficult to use, contact your provider.

The American Thoracic Society also recommends that patients and caregivers receive education on oxygen equipment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety, including fire prevention and tripping hazards.

Can Oxygen Therapy Be Stopped?

In some cases, oxygen therapy may be temporary. If a lung condition improves or oxygen levels recover, a provider may reduce or stop oxygen therapy after reassessment. In other cases, patients may need long-term oxygen support. Follow-up visits are important because oxygen needs can change over time.

Internal Linking

Learn more about Oxygen Therapy.

Explore Pulmonary Function Testing.

Read about COPD Care and Pulmonary Support.

When to Call a Provider

Call your provider if you notice increased shortness of breath, lower oxygen readings than usual, dizziness, chest discomfort, confusion, worsening fatigue, or symptoms that interfere with daily activities. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty or chest pain.

Oxygen therapy can be an important part of pulmonary care when used correctly. If you have questions about oxygen levels, breathing symptoms, or whether testing is needed, Pulmonary & Medicine Associates PLLC can help.
