Minimally Invasive Lung Tissue Sampling for Precise Diagnosis

At Pulmonary & Medical Associates, we offer Transbronchial Lung Biopsy (TBLB) as a safe, minimally invasive procedure to help diagnose a wide range of lung conditions. When imaging tests alone do not provide enough information, TBLB allows our pulmonologists to collect lung tissue samples with accuracy and care.

What Is a Transbronchial Lung Biopsy?

A Transbronchial Lung Biopsy involves using a bronchoscope—a thin, flexible tube inserted through the nose or mouth—to access the lungs. Your pulmonologist uses special instruments through the bronchoscope to collect small tissue samples for lab analysis. This test helps identify the underlying cause of respiratory symptoms and abnormalities seen on imaging.

When a Lung Biopsy Is Recommended

Your provider may recommend TBLB if you have symptoms or imaging findings that suggest:

  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Lung infections
  • Lung nodules or masses
  • Possible lung cancer or metastasis

This procedure plays a key role in confirming diagnoses and guiding treatment plans.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • TBLB is performed under sedation or local anesthesia
  • A bronchoscope is inserted through your nose or mouth
  • The doctor collects small lung tissue samples for testing
  • The procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes
  • Mild throat discomfort or coughing may occur afterward
  • Most patients go home the same day
