Preventive Screening for Women’s Health
At Pulmonary & Medical Associates, we prioritize women’s health by offering comprehensive, preventive care. A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a routine screening used to detect early signs of cervical cancer and other health concerns. This simple and highly effective test is a critical part of a woman’s regular healthcare plan.
What Is a Pap Smear?
A Pap smear collects a sample of cells from the cervix to check for abnormal changes. These changes may signal the presence of precancerous cells, infection, or inflammation. The test is quick, generally painless, and performed during a well-woman exam.
Why Pap Smears Matter
Cervical cancer can develop without symptoms. Regular Pap smears help detect abnormal cells early, when treatment is most effective. When combined with HPV testing, this screening becomes even more powerful in preventing cervical cancer.
Who Should Get a Pap Smear?
Women should begin Pap smear screenings at age 21. Most women should repeat the test every three years, although your provider may recommend a different schedule based on your medical history or risk factors.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your provider will use a speculum to gently open the vaginal canal and collect cells from the cervix using a soft brush. The process takes only a few minutes. After lab analysis, we will contact you with results and recommend any needed follow-up.
